Cream's name is a pun of the foods " vanilla cream" and " cream cheese" which underlines her relationships with Cheese and Vanilla the Rabbit. It is likely that some aspects of these designs were reused for later characters like Marine the Raccoon and Sticks the Badger. They appear to include a squirrel, cat, and red panda. Like Sonic and Silver, Cream had several early concepts as different kinds of animals. Just as Tails is the sidekick of Sonic, Cream serves the same purpose for Amy Rose and Blaze the Cat.
